Welcome to the Lincolnland Legends Program

Congratulations to the 2008-2009 Lincolnland Legends winners, listed below, who were honored at the Lincolnland Legends Awards Gala on April 4. Special congratulations to our top two statewide winners:

Jessica Beam of Oakland High School was awarded a total of $12,000 in scholarship funds for writing the top essay in the statewide contest. Jessica’s essay commended Tammi Clancy, a substance abuse counselor with the Central East Alcoholism and Drug Council and the clinical supervisor at the Hour House in Charleston, for her dedication to helping others struggling with alcoholism and substance abuse.

Kari Yamamoto of Lakes Community High School authored the 2nd place essay, earning a total of $8,000 in scholarship funds. Kari’s essay honored Kathy Mitsuuchi, founder and current Director of Student Services of Antioch Teen Mothers Choices, for her efforts to help teen mothers have a chance to succeed in life with their child.

Lincolnland Legends is a program from Illinois Dollars for Scholars designed to engage Illinois students in honoring people who inspire and motivate them. Any current Illinois high school junior or senior may nominate by essay someone for special recognition. Nominees must be a current or former resident of Illinois, and still living.

The Lincolnland Legends Program has several goals:

  • Provide an opportunity for Illinois students to identify Illinois citizens who have made significant contributions to society and who serve as role models and inspirational figures for youth
  • Develop an appreciation for outstanding Illinoisans who have overcome life obstacles and/or accomplished significant goals
  • Create and instill a sense of pride in being from Illinois
  • Provide an interesting, fun and motivating educational activity for students and teachers
  • Provide $97,500 in scholarships to college-bound Illinois students
